All K-Pop fans, national or international, were shocked when the news of GOT7 leaving JYP Entertainment went viral. A few days after GOT7’s contract with JYP Entertainment expired on the 19th of January,2021, GOT7 member Choi Youngjae signed with another agency.

As Youngjae signed with his new agency, he started working on various aspects of his career as an artist. His agency had immediately prepared schedules for him. He first went to perform in the Levi’s 501 Day Music Concert where he performed his self-written song ‘Lonely’. In June, Youngjae played a role in Netflix’s Korean first sitcom named ‘So Not Worth It’. In the Korean sitcom, Youngjae played the role of a character named Sam, who is the son of the president of an Australian tteokbokki global food chain. His love interest in this sitcom was played by (G)I-DLE’s Minnie.
Then, he went on to play a part in a musical called ‘Midnight Sun’ from May to July. The musical is an adaptation of a Japanese film named ‘A Song to the Sun’. Youngjae played in 22 out of the 95 performances of the musical. Later, Youngjae released two of the musical ‘Midnight Sun’ songs as singles. He also collaborated with Kei from the girl group Lovelyz for a song, ‘Goodbye Days’ in June. In May, he sang his first Original Sound Track called ‘Pop Star’ for the drama ‘So I Married the Anti-Fan’ as a solo artist after leaving JYP Entertainment.
Youngjae’s first EP as a Solo Artist
On 5th October 2021, Youngjae released his first EP ‘Colours from Ars’ which marked his solo debut. The title track of his Extended Play is called ‘Vibin’. Currently having 379K subscribers on his YouTube channel, the video of the track, which was released 5 months back, has 7.8 million views to date. It’s certainly not a bad start for Youngjae. Youngjae’s EP sold 19,718 copies on the first day itself and, 45,000 copies for the week. This speaks a lot about his potential to grow as a popular solo idol.
In December, Youngjae starred as the male lead in the rom-com web series ‘Love and Wish’ which is based on a webtoon of the same name. He played the role of a high-school student named Kim Seung-Hyu, alongside the actress Choi Ye-Bin. The web series has a rating of 9.1 out of 10 on Rakuten Viki, which is not bad considering the fact that Youngjae is an artist who has entered the acting circle not too long ago.
On December 15th, Youngjae released a new single ‘Walk With Me’. The single performed fairly well in the market. Later in December, he participated in the ‘We All Are One 2021’ concert. Recently, on March 24th, it was announced that Youngjae has been chosen to act as the DJ for MBC FM4U’s radio program ‘Close Friend’.
