When people dress up as their favourite characters from movies or video games, they participate in the craze known as Cosplay. This work is a collision of innovation, community, and fan service. Another benefit is that it allows people to reflect on why and how they chose to dress up.
In this phrase, “costume play” is a mashup of “costume.” Many visitors come dressed as their favourite movie, television, anime, or video game characters from all over the world to attend the festival.” This, on the other hand, is a popular anime-watcher expression. It is a form of costume play when people dress up as their favourite fictional characters for fun.
While scrolling Instagram, we came across Uzi’s profile. The first thing that kept us engaged was the Cosplay of Mahito. The makeup was up to a point, well then, if you notice, it clearly mentions she is a makeup artist. Furthermore, she has dedicated herself to campaigns such as #stopasianhate. Her Instagram profile contains a variety of cosplays, starting from Shinobu in Demon Slayer to Emma in Tokyo Revengers. She has displayed herself competently in all those characters she has cosplayed in. We took this opportunity to send her an email regarding an interview, and she immediately agreed to interview with us.
So here goes the interview; stay tuned till the end, and don’t forget to catch up on her work in the various social media links mentioned below. Before jumping into the questions about you and Cosplay, please introduce yourself to our audience.
Uzi: I’m Uzi, also known as Uzileks on Instagram, Tik Tok, and Twitch! I am a cosplayer that cosplays mostly anime and video game characters! I also love to stream me playing video games a lot <3
Question: What drew you to the idea of dressing like a fictional character in the first place?
Uzi: Since I was younger, dressing up as characters I really loved was always a hobby of mine, so growing up, I guess it just always stuck with me! I got bored of only dressing up for Halloween as I got older and always wished I could do more with it since it was so fun, and soon enough, I found out that Cosplay was a hobby that many people have!
Question: In order to be genuinely authentic, Cosplay is a time-consuming art form that necessitates precise attention to every minute detail. Why or why not? Also, which part is the most difficult for you to complete?
Uzi: One of the challenges I faced as a cosplayer, especially on social media, was when I first started to cosplay at a young age and first started using makeup, it wasn’t that good, so when I would post some of my Cosplay online I would always deal with criticism. I learned to deal with it, though, and tried to use the criticism to improve myself! Another challenge was getting the money to go to the conventions I wanted to go to and getting the cosplays I wanted to get, but I managed to save up money to always try my best to purchase these things.
Question: You have cosplayed as varied characters. So, could you share some of your unforgettable experiences while cosplaying these characters?
Uzi: An unforgettable moment as a cosplayer was when I cosplayed Mikasa from Attack On Titan, and I posted this Tik Tok of me doing this trend, and it gained a lot of views and likes; which helped me get more out there! I was surprised by how many people ended up liking my cosplays and ended up supporting me, and it meant a lot to me <3
Question: Among the numerous professions, What has attracted you to cosplay particularly?
Uzi: My inspiration for Cosplay was a lot of famous people from the cosplay community, such as @yayahan. I saw their amazing cosplays, and it looked like a lot of fun, and I wanted to join in!
Question: While displaying yourself in hundreds of characters. Did it ever make you feel like taking a break from cosplaying or giving up?
Uzi: No, I feel like cosplaying plays a big part of me now, and I don’t ever want to or plan to let it go!
Question: Tell us about your fun experiences as a cosplayer, where you felt the hard work was completely worth it!
Uzi: Honestly, I’ve never really created a cosplay, but a fun one that I did put together was Power from Chainsaw Man because she reminds me a lot of myself, and she’s hilarious!
Question: Among all of your previous cosplay creations. Which of your creations do you believe was the most difficult?
Uzi: I’d say my Shinobu cosplay was the most difficult to create because of her hair! I had to deal with two wigs for me to get it right.
Question: We have bombarded you with questions relating to your experience with Cosplay. So now tell us about your favorite Anime & TV show?
Uzi: My favourite anime is definitely Soul eater! It was one of the first animes that I ever watched, and I fell in love with the story, the characters, and the very unique art style!
Question: Other than Cosplay, what else piques your interest?
Uzi: My other hobbies other than cosplaying is drawing, video games, and playing instruments! I play guitar, ukulele, and violin! Most of the time, I’m seen playing different video games though, if I’m not cosplaying!
Question: What sort do you think you are now that you’ve cosplayed a wide range of characters? Like the types of people who are particularly interesting to you. What drew you to those particular characters, and why did you stick with them?
Uzi: I really love cosplaying 2b a lot from Nier Automata, and the reason why I do is that I really love the game and I love the character herself! Her character design is beautiful, and I feel like it’s the Cosplay that fits me the most!
Question: What are your long-term goals in terms of Cosplay or the roles you want to play? Are you looking forward to seeing them?
Uzi: Future cosplays I plan to do eventually are definitely Apex Legends characters since I am so in love with that game, and I’d love to become one of the characters! I am very excited to cosplay from that game since it is my favourite game right now, and I’ve been playing it since it was first released.
Question: What’s your experience been like at a con before? Where have you been to the biggest con? I’m curious as to what you’ve learned through the process.
Uzi: I have been to a con every year since about 2015! I’d say the biggest con I went to was Anime Central in Chicago! It’s amusing there getting to know people and people coming up to each other to complement each other’s cosplays and such I also love that I can have a big community there to share a hobby with.
Question: What part of Cosplay do you enjoy the most? What is it about it that you can’t get enough of?
Uzi: My favourite part about it is trying different looks every time and improving my makeup skills! I love to see how I can look so different with every character.
Question: Now that you know a lot about the cosplay industry. What suggestions do you want to give to the people you are inspired by your work or about the cosplay industry in general and how to pursue it?
Uzi: Advice that I would give to other cosplayers who are new to the hobby is to have fun with the hobby! Nothing is a competition. It’s about what makes you happy, and you should have fun with it! Don’t let anyone bring you down, or don’t go on thinking about how their cosplays are better than yours. Never compare yourself! You improve every time and remember it’s a hobby you should have fun with!
Question: Please share the link to all your Social Media profiles?
