The American musical drama revolves around Lucious Lyon. He is a former drug dealer but later became a well-known name in the music industry. Lyon is the CEO of Empire Entertainment, which is the most successful music company. However, Lucious discovers he will die soon because of a certain medical condition. Therefore, he needs to choose the perfect successor to take over his successful dynasty after his demise. The plot revolves around themes like mental health, dysfunctional family, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and the extent people go to chase their dreams.

Also, Lucious’s wife Cookie Lyon, who got released after 17-years in prison, plans to take over her husband’s company and control her three sons. Therefore, all the family members fight among themselves to take on Excel Entertainment. Andre always wished to take on his father’s empire. To get the throne of Empire Entertainment, he even establishes the Lyon Dynasty along with his mother and brother Hakeem.

But Andre later returns to Empire Entertainment and Lucious eventually makes Andre the president of the sister company, Gutter Life Records. Whereas, Jamal who was considered as the black sheep of the family became Lucious’s successor at the end of the second season. he even started working as an interim CEO when Lucius got arrested. But he became addicted to painkillers to deal with his Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which led him to rehab. Jamal didn’t return in the sixth season but it was stated that he’s traveling to London with his husband and plans to adopt a kid.

Hakeem who was the favorite son of Lucious helps his mother Cookie to establish the Lyon Music Label. Initially, Hakeem didn’t have a positive relationship with his mother but as the story continued, the relationship between the mother and youngest son improved. Also, Hakeem tied the knot with his lover Maya. Whereas, Cookie established the Lyon Music Label to compete against her husband’s Emire Entertainment. But later in the series, she allowed Empire to acquire her company. Therefore, she became the co-CEO of Empire Entertainment.

What To Expect From The Spin-Off Series?

Lee Daniels and Danny Strong suggested that the spin-off series will focus on Loretha “Cookie” Lyon. Undoubtedly, Taraji P. Henson’s character is one of the fan favorites. There are still many secrets surrounding her character. Therefore, it would be great to have a spin-off series surrounding her character. Cookie spent 17-years in prison as punishment for her involvement in dealings with drugs. However, she and her husband both were into this illegal business but she alone took the fall for the crimes. Therefore, she believes that her going to prison was a sacrifice she did for her husband and to let him establish their dream project, Empire Entertainment, while she’s in prison.

After returning from the prison, Cookie plans to take over her husband’s company, as Lucious was near his inevitable death. And Cookie also wants to get her family together. But she later leaves Empire Entertainment to start her own music label company, Lyon Dynasty. Eventually, the Empire acquires Cookie’s company, but she becomes the co-CEO of the infamous Empire Entertainment. Thus, we can expect the spin-off series to show the life of Cookie. Like her early days, when she was doing drug dealings along with her husband and then her life in prison. The show might show some unseen sides of Taraji P’s character.
