Dolph was born Hans Lundgren on November 3, 1957 in Spanga, Sweden. While his mother named Sigrid Birgitta, worked as a teacher, his father, Carl Johan Hugo Lundgren, worked as an economist and engineer for the Swedish government. Dolph began practicing the art of martial arts such as judo at the age of seven. He learned Kyokushin Karate when he was at an early age of 10 years old and started lifting weights in his early teens. After spending his childhood in Spanga, Dolph moved to Nyland, Germany, at the age of 13 to live with his grandparents.

After graduating from high school, Lundgren moved to the United States and enrolled at Washington State University and later Clemson University to study chemical engineering.
