‘Doctor Who’ season 13 episode 2 will see the Doctor witnessing the Santorans during the Crimean War. Meanwhile, it seems that Dan and Yaz will be battling for their lives under dire circumstances. Season 13 of Doctor Who premiered on BBC One on October 31, 2021. Chris Chibnall has returned for the third and the last time as head writer and executive producer. This season marks the thirteenth installment in the series since the 2005 revival. In the overall series, season 13 is the thirty-ninth installment. Jodie Whittaker stars as the titular Doctor. Mandip Gill and John Bishop star along with Whittaker in the main cast. Gill plays the Doctor’s traveling companion Yasmin Khan. Bishop plays the other companion Dan Lewis. Season 13 is set to run for a total of six episodes.
This season follows the Doctor and her companions dealing with a mysterious but dangerous entity — Flux. This mysterious entity will be the overarching focus of season 13. ‘Flux’ is also the subtitle of this season. We’ve already gotten the first look at this perilous entity in the opening episode. The Doctor, Yaz, and Dan will be taking help from unlikely allies to defend Earth from Flux. Chibnall wrote for all six episodes, except for episode 4, which he co-wrote with Maxine Alderton. Jamie Magnus Stone and Azhur Saleem have both directed three episodes each for season 13.
Let’s now delve into all that episode 2 of Doctor Who seasons 13 will have. Spoilers ahead!
Episode 1 opened with the Doctor and Yaz on a chase. They’re pursuing one of the dog-like Lupari species — Karvinista. The chase reaches Liverpool, where Karvinista kidnaps Dan Lewis. The Doctor then has a psychic vision of the Swarm. The Swarm, it seems, has a connection to the Doctor. The Time Lord Division had imprisoned the Swarm a millennia ago. It has now escaped and frequently connects with the Doctor via psychic links.
The Doctor and Yaz eventually reach Karvinista’s ship. While Yaz rescues Dan, Doctor confronts Karvinista over his connections to the Division. That’s when the Doctor spots Lupari’s invasion plan. However, Karvinista tells her that the Lupari are actually saving humanity. The plan is to defend Earth against the imminent destruction by the Flux. Karvinista tells them that it’s an unknown entity that defies all space-time laws and consumes everything in its path. We see the Flux in action when it causes chaos at a remote outpost in deep space. This also catches the attention of the Sontarans.
Meanwhile, the Doctor has another psychic link to the Swarm, which only speeds up Flux’s onslaught. The Doctor and Karvinista start working together, and the latter form a defensive shield with the other Lupari ships. While the Earth is protected from the Flux, the TARDIS is not. The episode ends with the Doctor, Dan, and Yaz still inside the TARDIS engulfed by the Flux. The title for the opening episode of season 13 was “Chapter One: The Halloween Apocalypse”. Jamie Magnus Stone directed the episode with the teleplay from Chris Chibnall.
