ABC landed itself in a weird place in 2018. The Network went on to cancel TV shows that performed well economically for reasons we all know. Designated Survivor was one of them, neither a critical success nor good with the ratings, it is a political drama that deals with the story of President Kirkman. Reasons behind its cancellation being a difference of opinions between the makers of the show and the Network ABC. And to add to that, Designated Survivor was being handled by a team of 4 producers and that according to a highly placed source was generating “a lot of behind the scenes churn.”
Nicely put, President Channing Dungey of ABC informed the media that the Network was less confident about the creative path being followed by the creative team of Designated Survivor. So as a result of reasons mentioned above, Designated Survivor Season 3 was given a miss by ABC. What happened next was interesting, Netflix jumped at the opportunity and shopped for the series. Designated Survivor was previously owned by Hulu and now is it solely owned by Netflix so that it will be billed as a Netflix Original from now on.
