So good news for fans of Designated Survivor is that Netflix has renewed Season 3 of the Keifer Sutherland political drama. Many cancelled shows have been given platform by Netflix in 2018, for example, The Last Kingdom. Netflix is on a roll in 2018. This development comes months after ABC cancelled the drama for difference of opinion purposes. Not that the drama wasn’t that bad performing, it just got cancelled along with a long list of dramas for reasons best known to ABC. Now, this isn’t all that Netflix has done with regards to Designated Survivor. It has also landed the U.S. and Canadian streaming rights to seasons one and two of the drama.

It should be mentioned that Designated Survivor was previously owned by another digital-giant Hulu. Hulu had stacking rights in the U.S. to the first two seasons as part of its deal with ABC. If you haven’t watched the show, you may do that easily now on Netflix. First two Seasons are available to viewers in Canada and the US. For Season 3 now, Designated Survivor will be sold as Netflix Originals.

Netflix Vice President of content Bela Bajaria has called the show, “Timely and gripping.” “Designated Survivor has quickened the pulses of our Netflix members outside the U.S. and Canada in its first two seasons.” Designated Survivor will not return until 2019. Netflix in its move immediately got Designated Survivor to air (after ABC’s May cancellation). This also meant that Netflix also sorted out owning rights with Hulu for Designated Survivor.

Designated Survivor is one of those shows that was low rated by critics. But it turned out to be profitable for ABC. Credit goes to a lucrative Netflix SVOD deal and good international sales. There’s talk that ABC wanted to change the showrunner of Designated Survivor before the cancellation. It wanted Baer to take over. “The show had a lot of behind-the-scenes churn with the number of showrunners,” reported Channing Dungey. He mentioned creative concerns about the series also as a reason for cancellation.

Designated Survivor Season 3: Cast

The cast of Season 3 involves: Kiefer Sutherland as president Tom Kirkman will be there in a lead role. Kiefer is excited to work with Netflix for Designated Survivor 3. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season three of Designated Survivor with Netflix, eOne and Neal Baer,” he said. Kiefer had the chance, and he took a dig at ABC for cancellation of the show. He spoke of how the Network had placed creative limitations upon them. Keifer said that the next Season would dig deeper into issues faced by the American Electorate that previously wasn’t possible for them. Baer now indeed has been cast as showrunner.

Others include Adan Canto as Aaron Shore, Italia Ricci as Emily Rhodes and LaMonica Garrett as Mike Ritter. Kal Penn and Maggie Q are also expected to be there for Season 3 as Seth Wright and Hannah Wells respectively.

The official synopsis provided by makers goes: “President Kirkman will face a political reality campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? Designated Survivor season 3 will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance, and ‘fake news.’ Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.”
