Designated Survivor Season 3: Heading To Netflix, Release Date, Plot, Cast

The political drama called Designated Survivor was canceled on ABC earlier this year. At the same time it was shopped by Netflix, and now, of course, it will be aired on Netflix. The first two Seasons of the show were loved across audiences in Canada and United States. Netflix, therefore, wasted no further time in giving it a platform. The story of President Kirkman needs to be told to a larger audience, so the markers of Designated Survivor are eternally grateful to Netflix.

Bela Bajaria of Netflix called the Series ‘timely and gripping’ and therefore worthy of a chance. Bela spoke of how it was the international audience viewership that prompted Netflix for a Season 3 of Designated Survivor. First two Seasons are broadcast on Netflix too. If one were to look at Netflix’s shopping this year, one thinks Netflix is taking a leap of faith with all the show’s it’s giving chances. Mark Gordon, the executive producer of Designated Survivor called such a situation ‘win-win,’ and TBH I couldn’t agree more.

Designated Survivor Season 3: Release Date

Fans of the show, for now, are binge-watching it again on Netflix, reliving the political drama for now as Season 3 will still be far away. Given that the series was canceled by ABC earlier this year, just in May, one should be willing to wait for Season 3 a little more. Designated Survivor will be broadcast on Netflix in 2019; there’s no chance that it will come to Netflix before that. You may no longer just call it Designated Survivor but a Netflix original. First, two Seasons of Designated Survivor were owned by Hulu, so I guess Netflix, Hulu, and ABC have sorted out ownership rights between themselves.
From the very beginning, it was made clear to us that Designated Survivor will have the average Netflix format, i.e., 10 episodes per Season.

Designated Survivor Season 3 Release Date

Why Did ABC Cancel Designated Survivor Season 3?

I must mention at the very beginning that Designated Survivor was commercially successful. And despite that, it was cancelled by ABC. We’ve heard plenty of of reasons as to why Designated Survivor was cancelled by ABC. First off, the Series makers and ABC had a difference of opinion over the show’s content. Next, the show was being produced by 4 people. Talk about confusion creation. “A lot of behind the scenes churn” is what the reports say about the cancellation of the show. President Channing Dungey spoke of how ABC was less confident with the creative path followed by makers of Designated Survivor.

Designated Survivor Season 3: Cast

Kiefer Sutherland as president Tom Kirkman will obviously make a come back. Kiefer is thrilled to be teaming up with Netflix for Designated Survivor Season 3. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for season three of Designated Survivor with Netflix, eOne and Neal Baer,” he said. Not only that, Kiefer took a dig at ABC and spoke of how the Network had placed creative limitations upon them. He promised that next Season would dig deeper into issues faced by the American Electorate that previously wasn’t possible for them.

Adan Canto as Aaron Shore, Italia Ricci as Emily Rhodes and LaMonica Garrett as Mike Ritter will all be seen in Season 3 of Designated Survivor. Kal Penn and Maggie Q are also expected to be there for Season 3 as Seth Wright and Hannah Wells respectively.

Designated Survivor Season 3: Plot

For the plot of Designated Survivor, we no longer will debate. We have an official synopsis provided for Season 3:

“President Kirkman will face a political reality campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and ‘fake news’. Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.”
