When you think of Akira Toriyama’s favourite character from his famous Dragon Ball franchise, you would probably assume that his favourite character would be a Saiyan. I mean, it does make sense for it to be a Saiyan, especially as most of the other characters were useless by the end of Dragon Ball Z.
However, many of the older original non-Saiyan characters are starting to make a comeback in Dragon Ball Super, which includes Toriyama’s favourite character in Piccolo.
In the past, Piccolo was Goku’s rival and an enemy of humanity. Piccolo was the evil half of the guardian of the earth in Kami and swore to kill Goku. However, after the attack of the Saiyan’s and the events on Namek, Piccolo began to love and become a good natures person; similar to Vegeta.
As a result, Piccolo became a much-loved character by Dragon Ball fans, with him being the strongest non-Saiyan character in the series and for most of Dragon Ball Z, matching the Saiyan’s as well. In addition, Piccolo had some of the most badass entrances ever, which is a job Vegeta has now taken.
Yes, Piccolo was awesome, however; his input has been reduced as the series continued, yet Toriyama still rates him higher than all the rest and this is why.
“I guess I like Piccolo the most after all. Out of all the enemies, Piccolo Daimaō is the one I like most, and even after that I like Piccolo the most,” Toriyama said.
“I like Piccolo about the same as I like Goku. With Vegeta, well, I don’t like him all that much, but he was extremely helpful to have around.”
This was revealed in an interview for Daizenshuu 2 with Kazenshuu and it has surprised many fans, especially with his evil origins as Demon King Piccolo so long ago. Maybe this is why Piccolo has remained an important part of the series and has had more power-ups than any non-Saiyan, which has kept him relevant enough.
