All The Members of Red Velvet K-Pop Band

Red Velvet
Red Velvet (SM Entertainment)

Red Velvet (레드벨벳) is a South Korean girl group formed and under the company SM Entertainment. Red Velvet’s music reflects their name musically, their mainly pop “red” side dabbles in electronic, funk, and hip hop on occasion, while their “velvet” side focuses on ’90s-influenced R&B with ballad and jazz elements. The group had originally debuted as a four-member girl group with Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy on August 1, 2014. However, Yeri joined the group in March 2015, marked by their first big release, Ice Cream Cake, making it a five-piece band. Red Velvet is widely known and praised for its ‘hook’ song.

Two studio albums, one reissue album, one compilation, and nine extended plays are included in the group’s Korean-language discography, with eleven of them reaching the top of South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart. The group ventured into the Japanese music scene with the extended plays #Cookie Jar (2018) and Sappy (2019). Forbes Korea Power Celebrity has called them one of the most influential South Korean celebrities,11 in 2018 and 5 in 2019. Time and Billboard have also called them one of the most influential K-pop groups in the world, and they are the fifth most-streamed K-pop artist on Spotify as of February 2020.

The members’ style is affected by Red Velvet’s dual concept. They typically wear bright, traditionally girlish clothing in their “red” concept, such as pastel sweaters and skirts in “Ice Cream Cake” and red doll outfits in “Dumb Dumb.” For their “velvet” side, they dress more maturely, such as in “Be Natural,” where they wear suits.

The five-piece South Korean girl group debuted originally as a four-member girl group back in 2014. The members of the groups are Irene, Joy, Wendy, Selugi and Yeri joining the group in 2015.  Red Velvet has been praised for defying stereotypes among South Korean girl groups, which seem to fall into one of two categories: “cute and pure” or “sexy.” In 2018, the director of the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange cited Red Velvet as a major contributor and one of the country’s most talented idol groups who have “largely supported K-pop” around the world when speaking about the Korean Wave.

I’m sure all of us are now very curious about the members, who have had made such a huge impact during the Korean Wave along with Kpop groups like BTS and Blackpink to name a few. Let us get to know about the members and what they have been up to.
