Coroner is a Canadian police procedural crime drama with Morwyn Brebner at the helm. The series can be seen to be based around the Jenny Cooper series of novels written by M. R. Hall.
The series came into the limelight back in 2019 on CBS, after people loved the show and it started gaining traction a third season was also ordered for the network.
The show mainly focuses on one powerful female character, a recently widowed coroner named Dr. Jenny Cooper. After becoming a coroner she investigates all kinds of suspicious deaths that take place in and around the Toronto area.
The show somehow goes in great depth to Toronto as a location, we get to see the city as a character of its own. Each episode would have our female protagonist investigating a new death in a new location in the city, where she gets to learn more about the city. She uses different tactics to find out the cause of death, leading to each episode having different themes.
Homicide Detective Mac McAvoy also tags along as her partner. The duo is at the frontline when it comes to investigating different kinds of suspicious deaths. They are not the only 2 people on the team, we have more people that support this amazing duo. They are supported by Jenny’s assistant Alison Trent, a pathologist called Dr. Dwayne Allen, and his assistant River Baitz.
Solving weird cases isn’t the only part of this thrilling show. We also have our main character dealing with her problems. She has a teenage son who is going through a very bad phase because of the loss of his father. She is having troubles with a new relationship she has taken an interest in and is also coping with clinical anxiety.
The first season of Coroner gave us an introduction to all of the characters and set up the whole story for us. We saw Jenny taking up her first job as a coroner and she finds out it’s not a simple task. The first job itself affects her personally as it seems to affect her personally.
The first case was about a teenage boy who was found dead in a youth detention center. With her husband just passing away recently and having to look after a teenage son on her own, life seems to be bad for her right now.
We also see episodes where Jenny tries to balance her personal life and work life. The Thanksgiving episode is an example, she tries to host a great party but that goes south when the plumbing in her house collapses for some reason. The final episode had the main duo investigating the death of a coworker, the clues lead to a serial killer.
The second season of Coroner has a 2 part ending which has us on the edge of our seats. Jenny is approached by the most dangerous enemy yet and the enemy threatens to wreak havoc on her family, work, and everything she holds dear.
In this season we also see Jenny having to deal with more and more problems other than the cases she has. Her anxiety issues have increased, her son has turned 18 causing problems there as well. her father has dementia and that seems to be getting worse by the day and finally, she is also facing problems in her relationship.
In the second part of the finale, the man duo is on the run to stop and figure out who this dangerous culprit is. they don’t have much time.
