Future Diary is one of the best psychological thrillers in the world of anime. So, we have shortlisted a few anime similar to Future Diary that follow the same themes or genre. The anime is an adaptation of the manga sharing the same name. Sakae Esuno gave the original story and the illustrations for the manga. The manga was one of the most popular Kodaowa Shoten’s Shonen Ace manga with 12 volumes, which was serialized between January 2006 and December 2010. Apart from an exhilarating psychological thriller, the series also consists of lots of mysteries and romance.

The anime aired twenty-six episodes from 9 October 2011 to 15 April 2012 under the banner of Funimation. The series depicts a deadly battle royale between 12 individuals who are granted “Future Diaries” by the God of Time and Space, Deus Ex Machina. The final survivor of the game will become his heir. The story follows 14-year-old Yukiteru Amano, who writes his experiences on his cell phone. He believes Deus Ex Machina and his assistant Muru Muru are his imaginary friends until he discovers their real identities after Deus transforms his phone into a Future Diary.

As the game begins, Yuno Gasai, Yukiteru’s classmate, starts protecting him. However, she is a psychopathic stalker who is madly in love with. Not only that, but she is also a contestant of the game, all the while hiding some terrible secrets of her own. The story continues as the pair eliminates other contestants together with the help of their diaries. However, only one of them will survive at the end of the game, and their love will be put to the test when both their lives are at stake. Similar to Future Diary, this anime is also about a survival death game. The story follows unemployed and isolated man Ryota Sakamoto, who is one of the world’s top players of a popular video game. However, he finds himself on an island in the middle of nowhere with no memory of how he got there. He has a small green crystal embedded in his left hand. Sakamoto realizes that he is living in the real-life version of the game he is so fond of.

Unfortunately, the risks to his life are real as well. The game provides him a bag full of unique bombs called “BIM”. The players have to kill seven other participants and take their green crystals to return home. Ryota is forced to fight as he wants to survive and return home. He joins hands with Himiko, another participant, who is Ryota’s wife in the game. As the two teams up against other contestants, they find themselves closer to the truth behind this brutal game of death.

The story follows 17-year-old Kaname Sudo, who accepts an online invitation by a friend to play a game called “Darwin’s Game”. However, he soon finds himself in the middle of a fight between life and death.

The players are given a Sigil, which is an ability that varies from player to player. Shuka Karino is a girl from a rich family who witnesses her parents’ death at Darwin’s Game player. A girl named Miho tricks her into the game. After knowing Kaname, she falls in love with him. While the pair are trapped in this game of murder and conquest, they struggle to clear the game and seek out to kill the Game Master.

The main protagonist of the anime, Rena Ryuuguu, is very similar to Yuno Gasai. They are both psychopaths in the middle of an insane storyline. The story focuses on a group of friends living in the fictional village of Hinamizawa. The story takes place during the summer of 1983, when strange events occur in the village. Rena Ryuuguu, Mion Sonozaki, Sakoto Houjo, and Rika Furude quickly become inseparable friends with Keiichi Maebara, who just moved to the village. However,  the quiet and peaceful village isn’t what it seems, as there’s a terrible secret that lurks underneath it.

During the preparation of the village’s annual festival, Keiichi learns about the several murders and disappearances in the village that took place in recent years. Not only that, he finds out that all those cases are related to the annual festival and the village’s god Oyashiro. While Keiichi tries to find out about those cases from his friends, their suspicious behavior makes him wonder if they are keeping something from him. While he doubts his friends and wonders if he can trust them, Keiichi finds himself becoming paranoid. Keiichi finds the truth behind these mysteries over the multiple arcs that takes place in the story.

The anime follows the events of those of the video game “Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc”. 16 high school students are locked inside “Hope’s Peak Academy”. Monokuma, an anthropomorphic bear and the Academy’s principal, threatens them to play the game. He tells them that the only way to leave the Academy is to murder another student and not be found guilty in the trial.

5. Deadman Wonderland

Both anime contain immense amounts of action, drama, psychological thriller, plot twists, and mystery elements. The intense and complex story in the anime is similar to Future Diary. The series tells the events of an earthquake that destroyed most of Tokyo. About three-quarters of the city sank into the Pacific Ocean due to the earthquake. Following the story of ten years after this event, Igarashi Ganta lives a simple life as a student in a middle school. He was the survivor of the great earthquake. However, he has no memories of the tragedy. Unfortunately, Ganta’s life changes when the “Red Man” massacres his entire class and embeds a red crystal in Ganta’s chest.

Now, Ganta is a suspect and is on trial for intentional murders. Every evidence represents him as the criminal, and Ganta received a death sentence at Deadman Wonderland. It is a prison that also serves as a theme park. There, the prisoners have to perform dangerous acts for the amusement of the visitors. Luckily, Ganta receives aid from a mysterious girl Shiro, whose existence is unknown to everyone except Ganta. The story proceeds as Ganta struggles in the brutal place while trying to clear his name from the crime with the help of Shiro.

6. Steins; Gate

The main similarity between both anime is that Steins; Gate is also all about altering the future with the information that they receive on their cell phones. The story follows mad and genius scientist Rintarou Okabe, who runs the Future Gadget Laboratory with his friends Mayuri Shiina and Itaru Hashida. They rent an apartment together that serves as their laboratory. However,  Rintarou starts experiencing mysterious situations while attending a conference about time travel. First, he finds the dead body of a neuroscience researcher Kurisu Makise and then sends a text message about it to Itaru. However, he later discovers that Kurisu is still alive, and the message arrived before he sent it.

Upon further analysis and research,  Rintarou and his friends discover that his cell phone-operated microwave oven, which they were developing, can somehow send text messages back in time. Joined by Kurisu, the group research these mysterious phenomena. However, this catches the attention of a mysterious organization, SERN. The organization secretly researches about time-travel. The lives of Rintarou and his friends are in danger as the organization will do anything to get a hold of Rinatorou’s cell phone.
