Michael Ashley Ball was born on the 27 June 1962 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England. He grew up with his siblings Kevin and Katherine. Kevin is four years older than Michael whereas Katherine is ten years younger than him. Tony, his father initially aspired to become an actor. However, he ended up becoming British Leyland’s global sales head.

Ball taught himself to sing at a very young age by singing along to songs that were played. He was also very much interested in theatre, which was noticed by his father, who took him to watch plays. Although he attended Plymouth College, Ball was not really a fan of academic studies or sports for that matter. He graduated from the Guildford School of Acting in the year 1984 and began pursuing a career in singing.

Michael Ball is in a relationship with Cathy McGowan, the former Ready Steady Go! presenter. The pair met way back in the year 1989 and have been living together since 1992. Cathy was married to Hywel Bennett, an actor with whom she shares a daughter named Emma, before dating Ball.
