In Five Days At Memorial Episode 6, we see how the investigative team starts to dig in as to what happened to 45 people found dead at the Memorial hospital after Hurricane Katrina. Suppose you’re unfamiliar with Five Days At Memorial. In that case, it’s a drama developed by John Ridley and Carlton Cuse based upon real events as chronicled in a book by the same name penned by Sheri Fink that tells what happened at a hospital during Hurricane Katrina.

This miniseries drama stars Vera Farmiga, Cherry Jones, Cornelius Smith Jr., Robert Pine, and Julie Ann Emery. It was initially developed for FX as a pitch for the third season of “American Crime Story” for Ryan Murphy. However, the adaptation never picked up, and the producers pitched the project elsewhere, landing it on Apple TV+. Now, let’s take a look at the latest episode.

Five Days At Memorial Episode 5 Recap

The hospital is in a desperate state. There is a severe shortage of food and liquids. Outside, there is anguish. Additionally, those working on the rescue effort are in serious need of time. The rescue effort has ceased because there are no boats or helicopters available. Susan is furious as the staff debates whether or not to treat their animals humanely. Susan adds that those patients who are not candidates for rescue should also receive “the humane thing.” Susan quickly points out that this is a genuine case of ending lives to end suffering rather than just keeping these people safe.

LifeCare loses more patients as Memorial debates this. Susan tells Diane that they are doing everything they can to help and that they won’t be leaving anyone behind. When Mark appears outside the hospital, everyone inside is ecstatic because they think help has arrived. Mark rushes through the hospital, dodging the crowd as he searches for his mother. He carries her to the boat outside because he is shocked that there isn’t an IV. Mark takes her mother and several other patients, but the cowardly security guard Charles escapes Memorial Hospital by jumping on the boat.

Helicopter Rescue Is Insufficient

Once more, helicopters land, and Diane decides to move her patients to the helipad, rejecting Susan’s suggestion. At the same time, medications are given out by the pharmacy for people to put their pets to sleep humanely. The problem is that all of this is related to the patient’s problems in the first place. More people are suffering and dying, which makes Anna and Susan’s moral compass unstable.

When rescue boats do arrive, it is greeted with a mixture of joy and complete hopelessness. The coastguard says it’s far too risky to make these runs at night, giving them only five hours to get people out. Of course, there are shooters and looters, as we have heard from previous episodes. Susan estimates it will take 24 hours to get everyone out, which is a very tight deadline. Susan resolves to do her best while vowing to leave no living patient behind.

Anna speaks to Dr. Cook, but Bryant King has also heard about their “humane” method of ending patient suffering. The boats arrive at the hospital in large numbers as he mulls over what this means. Susan bids her mother farewell before letting her go and staying behind. Additionally, helicopters arrive as the evacuation proceeds from two directions. Susan advises Horace to board the following boat, saying there is nothing else they can do for the patients there. She gives him a tight hug as she departs.

As family members are separated from immobile loved ones, it is heartbreaking to watch throughout the hospital, and Bryant stands back and watches as Anna starts giving injections. The LifeCare staff learns of this, and they struggle with whether or not doing this is the right thing. Some people have given up hope and accepted their terrible fate, believing it hopeless. Others, like Karen Wynn, refuse to take this situation lying down, so they make every effort to get as many patients out as they can.

Into The Dark

Together, the doctors can save one patient, offering a sliver of hope amidst a depressing sea of suffering. Unfortunately, the coast guard departs as 5 o’clock approaches. Memorial Hospital is like a spooky, silent clock. A clock that is ticking down to death. And as they enter a room, we see a point-of-view shot of someone moving through the hospital. Then everything goes dark.
