‘Roohi’ Starring Rajkumar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor

The trailer for Rajkumar Rao’s upcoming film titled Roohi has been dropped on YouTube around 3 days ago and managed to gather a lot of appreciation. Roohi, a horror comedy film starring Rajkumar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor, and Varun Sharma seem to be a perfect amalgamation of spooking, coated over with humor. The film is a follow-up of Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkumar Rao starrer Stree, which came out in 2018. So let’s get you through the preview of the film, and break up the trailer into parts.

A briefing about the Trailer

So as the trailer begins, we’re made aware of the witch, who eyes the newlyweds. She is in a habit of abducting brides, as soon as she sees the groom asleep on their very first night of marriage. But while the silhouette of the witch is seen moving, as she’s being introduced, in an instant we see Hitesh and Lakiresh abducting Roohi, in the middle of a busy road. They do this, in order to save her from the clutches of the witch before she gets married. While they manage to take her to the middle of the forest to keep her safe, they find themselves stuck there, with Roohi, who to their surprise has been possessed.

While the spirit seems to be away from her body, Hitesh goes up to Roohi and introduces himself. He doesn’t stammer, but just twists up words while he’s speaking. His innocence hits Roohi, and she smiles. But a minute into the moment, the spirit is back in action. Hitesh feels pity for a girl like Roohi to be caught under the clutches of an evil spirit and speaks to Lakiresh regarding the same. Lakiresh goes out and returns with a goat, a buffalo, and a hen, which scares Roohi. When being asked about why the animals have been brought, he refers to them as Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner respectively. Roohi says that she’s a vegetarian but mockingly, Lakiresh replies that she shouldn’t be selfish. Because the one inside her loves to have non-vegetarian food and she’d feed on it at any cost.

We then see Hitesh visiting various places that claim to shoo away spirits from an individual’s body. He visits an Indian exorcist who successfully frees a woman from a spirit’s possession, but eventually, the same spirit gets hold of a man, sitting right next to her. On witnessing this, the places become a bit chaotic, and when Hitesh asks about it, one of the followers of Baba says that he is solely responsible for freeing a person from a spirit’s possession. If it takes up control of someone else’s body, he isn’t held responsible. The logic freaks him out, and he leaves the place.

Hitesh and Lakiresh then take Roohi to an experienced exorcist who casts out spirits by means of a magical paan. According to him, as soon as a possessed person consumes the paan, the spirit leaves the body, right away. But it all goes in vain when the witch takes full control of Roohi’s body and ends up throwing away the exorcist, even before he could react. Seeing Roohi completely out of control and behaving dangerously, he ties her up against a tree. We then see them taking Roohi away, and the exorcist explaining the entire matter to the men.

The witch that has possessed Roohi is very powerful, and it’s next to impossible for them to cast her away. She’s referred to as ‘Mudiyapairi’ who will only leave Roohi if the witch gets married. But when Hitesh questions, why if she doesn’t get married? The only answer he gets is Death. We then see Lakiresh acting weirdly as if he is under some spell. He claims to be in love with the witch and starts acting all dramatic. Maybe the only man the witch actually wants to get married to is Lakiresh, and that’s what freaks out Hitesh. So when he kind of recreates the Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge scene, it terrifies Hitesh, for he doesn’t want him to be under the witch’s control too. So will Lakiresh get married to Mudiyapairi? Because the only way to get rid of her is marriage. Will it have a similar ending to Stree? Well, we never know.

Will Roohi bring back the audiences?

Well, as we look into the newly released trailers and teasers, the film has managed to create a lot of buzz around it, mainly because they get some Stree vibes surrounding it. Stree has previously been a hit and managed to woo the audiences with an amazing film. And as Roohi is an outcome of the same creative team and manages to fetch the perfect cast, we’re sure that the film will be welcomed by the masses.

Last year, Janhvi Kapoor’s OTT release titled Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, fetched her unanimous accolades. And now, she is back in a totally different avatar, something she hasn’t done before. Not to forget her co-star Rajkumar Rao, who never fails to surprise us with the kind of script he takes up and puts his heart and soul in it. He too has been going through a winning streak with his previous releases The White Tiger and Ludo, which released digitally and gathered him appreciation from around the country.

What the trade experts have got to say?

The trade analyst Girish Johar said in his comments that Roohi has managed to create a lot of buzz around it, solely because of the star cast and its horror-comedy genre, which managed to create a decent place in the hearts of the audiences previously. He believes that the cast has a good grip when it comes to the box office and the genre has proved to be successful too in the past. The team hasn’t begun their promotions yet but he feels that if the content somehow manages to draw the attention of the viewers, he is confident that the makers would definitely have a pretty decent start at the box office.

Speaking about the same, trade expert Atul Mohan feels that the film overall is good and might be the first A-lister film to arrive at the theatres with 100% occupancy if all the states allow it. The film is an extension of 2018 hit Stree and follows the same genre, with Maddock Films being the producers again. It although features Rajkumar Kumar as the lead, just like the previous time, but is all might not be the same, since the scenario is different now. People during the lockdown have changed their movie-watching habits, and aren’t preferring to walk out and go to cinemas. So, Roohi might have to face some difficulties. But since we have been saying for ages, a good product is strong enough to draw the attention of the viewers towards it. So fingers crossed.

Roohi release date

Roohi was initially scheduled to hit the big screen in June 2020 but got shifted to March 2021 due to the ongoing world pandemic. Since the theatres have been re-opened, no such new films have been released yet. So, Roohi is going to be the first major Bollywood film to hit the big screens, post lockdown. All in all, the film will be the first one to arrive at the theatres, after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting allowed cinema halls across the nation to operate at full capacity from 1 February, with proper COVID-19 safety protocols. So don’t forget to treat yourself to this upcoming horror comedy on 11 March 2021, in your nearest theatres.
