A minor pregnant mother who gave birth as a single mother during her initial days in the industry experienced several issues and obstacles. Stella was born in 1938 in Yazoo, Mississippi. She was born and named Estelle Caro Eggleston in the city of Estercalo. The only child of insurance salesman Thomas Ellett Eggleston and nurse Dobby Estelle (née Caro). Thomas and Dobby relocated to Memphis, Tennessee, when Stella was just four years old. 

When she was 16, she married Herman Stephens, electrician Noble on December 1, 1954. On June 10, 1955, she gave birth to their son, Herman Andrew Stevens, who is an actor and a filmmaker. Stella and her son continued to use a version of his surname in their stage names after the couple split for good in 1957. Later, she attended Memphis State University and began modeling and performing.


Stella Stevens’ life began to shine when a talent agent saw her charm and urged her to try her luck in Hollywood. This was her initial step. She made her film debut in 1959 as a supporting actress in Bing Crosby’s musical Say One for Me, but her major break came with Lil Abner.

Ms. Stevens made her cinematic debut in 1959 with the musical Her Say Her One Her Four Her Me, which starred Debbie Reynolds and Bing Her Crosby and earned her a Golden Globe Award. That same year, she starred as a fiery-haired secretary provocatively dubbed Appassionata Von Climax in the theatrical adaptation of the comic book Li’l Abner. Professor, featuring Jerry Lewis as the nerdy professor Kelp’s love interest. She is inspired by Dean Martin as well as Buddy Greco.

She also has worked as a film producer, director, and screenwriter and performed in various stage performances, including a touring production of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple, in which she played Sandy Dennis. Stevens is well known for delivering her song themes for the television series The Flintstones and Patty Her Duke Her Show; a group named Skip Her Jax was a member of her five-part Vocal ensemble.

In January 1960, the actress was named Playmate of the Month by Playboy magazine. Throughout the 1960s, she became one of the most photographed women in the world. She was ranked 27th in Playboy’s list of the 100 Hottest Stars of the 20th Century.

After her glamorous time was about to get over, she mentioned in an interview that when she intended to direct, every male I’ve talked about in every office in this profession has tried his hardest to discourage me from directing. They don’t want me to find out how easy it is since it’s meant to be really difficult. “I consider myself to be a work in progress, and I am still striving to be discovered. I will continue to work, grow, and accomplish the things that I am proud of,” she said.

Early Life

She went to St. Anne’s on Highland Street for Catholic school and Sacred Heart on Jefferson Avenue for public education. Memphis, Her Evening School at Memphis Polytechnic High School, graduated in 1955.

She became interested in acting and modeling while attending Memphis State University. Her performance in the college drama Bus Stop drew her attention. The Memphis Press-Scimitar gave her high-performance marks as well.

What Happened to Her?

Stella Stevens was a seasoned Hollywood actress best remembered for her appearances in The Nutty Professor as Stella and The Poseidon Adventure as Linda. She breathed her last on February 17 in Los Angeles at the age of 84. Her son, Andrew Stevens, disclosed to Variety that his mother had Alzheimer’s disease before she died.

“It was an honor and a joy to have worked with Stella, who was one of the most amazing and brilliant individuals,” said her friend and manager, Maria Calabrese.

Former Kiss member Bruce Kulick has also confirmed the tragedy on social media and said, “Legendary actress Stella Stevens, my brother’s lifelong lover, died away this morning following a prolonged illness. She said something along the lines of “Stella was reconnected with my brother, Bob today.” She appeared in a number of films that I enjoy. Knowing her personally was incredibly significant to my family and me. Stella, 1938-2023, rest in peace.
