Who Hosts The Bad Skin Clinic?

Dr. Emma Craythorne is a licensed Dermatologist and competent skin specialist that performs regular interventions with laser and Mohs micrographic techniques at the St. Johns Institute of Dermatology at Guys and Saint Thomas Hospital. She leads a multi-disciplinary team focused on treating skin cancer and other malignant skin conditions. And in each episode, she faces and treats the patients that come in for consultations with complex cases at the Harley Street Clinic where the crew for the show shoots The Bad Skin Clinic.

Dr. Craythrone is Northern Irish and studied medicine in Scotland at the Royal College of Physicians, then she studied dermatology at Kings College Hospital and after that, she did a fellowship in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and laser Surgery.

What Is Mohs Micrographic Surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized type of skin cancer treatment that can be used to remove very difficult-to-treat skin cancers. The surgery is named after Dr. Frederic Mohs, who developed the technique in the 1930s. In Mohs surgery, thin layers of cancerous tissue are systematically removed and examined under a microscope until only cancer-free tissue remains. The advantage of Mohs surgery is that it removes the minimum amount of tissue necessary to ensure that all of cancer has been removed while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible.

Mohs surgery can be used to treat a variety of different skin cancers, but it is most commonly used to treat basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer, your doctor will likely recommend Mohs surgery if the cancer is located in an area where it is important to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible, such as on the face or hands.

Why Are Dermatology Shows So Popular?

There are a few reasons that dermatology is so popular. First, skin conditions are very common, so there is a large potential patient base. Second, skin problems can be cosmetic as well as medical, so dermatologists can offer treatments that improve patients’ appearance as well as their health. Third, dermatologists have a lot of options for treating skin conditions, so they can tailor treatment to each individual patient. Finally, dermatology is a relatively new field, so there is a lot of excitement and innovation happening in the field right now.
