Bridgerton is an adaptation of American author Julia Quinn’s novel series of the same name. There are a total of eight books in the series telling the story of The Bridgerton family, consisting of eight siblings and their widowed mother. The family is well respected and favored in British society. All the books in the novel series tell the story of each of the siblings finding true love. The 2006 book of the series titles “On the Way to the Wedding” won the Romance Writers of America RITA Award in 2007. The first season featured Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton and Rege-Jean Page as Simon Basset as the central characters.
The Plot of Bridgerton
The first season is an adaptation of the 2000 book titled “The Duke and I”, focusing on Daphne Bridgerton. The story takes place in 19th century Britain where the series centers on the Bridgerton family. Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton, Violet is the widow who has four sons, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, and Gregory. She also has four daughters, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, and Hyacinth. The series also features the Featherington family; Portia, Lady Featherington, her husband, their three daughters Philippa, Prudence, and Penelope, and their cousin Marina Thompson.
Julie Andrews narrates each episode, voicing the anonymous and scandalous newsletter columnist Lady Whistledown. The first season of the series revolves around Daphne Bridgerton who enters her first social season with Queen Charlotte’s favor. She is the eldest daughter of the family. As she enters the high society, she meets Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. The Duke refuses to marry anyone, despite the encouragement of his mentor, Lady Whistledown. The series focuses on their relationship as they both deal with the scandals and betrayals in the high society of 19th century Britain.
Season 1 Summary
The story takes place in 1813 when all the households are preparing for the social season of arranging matches for marriage. Among the debutantes, Queen Charlotte praises Daphne Bridgerton that gives her an edge over the other ladies. Also, the three Featherington sisters are the other debutantes presented before the Queen. Lady Whistledown promotes Daphne as the season’s “Incomparable”. Meanwhile, Marina Thompson, a distant cousin of Lord Featherington comes to London to stay for the season. Lady Featherington takes Marina under her supervision.
The Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset returns to London to look over the affairs of his late father. Under the pressure of his Lady Danbury, he joins the season. Moreover, Viscount Anthony Bridgerton deems all suitors unworthy of his sister, Daphne. However, this doesn’t stop the despicable Lord Berbrooke from courting her. Lady Danbury and Lady Bridgerton work together to match-make Daphne and Simon. Concurrently, Anthony dumps his mistress, Siena Rosso. Lady Feathrington beings to doubt that Marina is pregnant. The first episode ends with Daphne and Simon agreeing to pretend to court each other for mutual benefits.
The second episode reveals the backstory of Simon, including his tragic childhood when his mother died in childbirth. Raised under the control of his cruel father, Simon grew up with his father’s dissatisfaction over having a less than perfect heir. On his father’s deathbed, Simon vows to never have an heir, as his father wanted the opposite. Meanwhile, Lady Whistledown’s writings start to frustrate the Queen. Marina tells Penelopeabout the father of her child, Sir Geroge Crane who is fighting in Spain.
As Simon and Daphne continue their pretense, Anthony grows more upset as he knows about Simon’s jaunty personality. Meanwhile, a chaotic situation arises when Lord Berbrooke demands Dephane’s hand, which results in him getting a black eye from Daphne. As Anthony cancels his business offer with Lord Berbrooke, Simon fights him over Daphne’s honor. The whole situation ends with Violet’s help. After this, Simon and Daphne are more drawn to each other. As Daphne is the most famous debutante this season, she keeps getting multiple proposals, but she turns all of them down. This annoys Lady Danbury and she demands Simon to either choose Daphne as his wife or let her find another suitable suitor. This results in Simon calling off their deal.
Simon decides to leave London and a heartbroken Daphne attracts Prince Friedrich’s attention. As Simon meets her to say his goodbyes, the two share a kiss, which Anthony saw and demands Simon to marry his sister. Seeing his refusal, Anthony challenges him to a duel at dawn. Simon tells her he cannot provide with children, but Daphne still agrees to marry him. The two get married in a simple ceremony at the church. However, Daphne realizes Simon’s actions to avoid her and confronts him about it. Simon and Daphne later travel to Clyvedon for their honeymoon, where Daphne meets Mrs. Colson. Mrs. Colson tells Daphne about Simon’s childhood.
However, Daphne decides to confront Simon after she realizes that he is purposefully avoiding having a child together. As their dispute continues, Daphne decides to leave for London. Simon is firm on his decision and suggests that they should live separately. However, Daphne finds out why Simon doesn’t want to have children. After she finds the letter Simon wrote for his father, she decides to make amends with him. George Crane’s brother Sir Philip Crane arrives with the news of George’s death in battle. He reveals that George did love Marina and intended to return to her. Philip proposes to marry Marina, which she refused at first, but later agrees. Daphne and Simon settle their differences and the season ends with the scene of the birth of Daphne and Simon’s first child.
Bridgerton Season 2 Release Date
On 21st January 2021, Netflix confirmed the renewal of the second season. However, there is still no official announcement about the release date of Bridgerton season 2. The filming of the second season will start in Spring 2021. So, there are fewer to no chances that the series will air this year. It is most likely that Netflix will premiere the season somewhere in 2022. We would guess that the release date of Bridgerton season 2 is most likely by Spring 2022.
What to Expect in the Second Season?
The second season of Bridgerton will be an adaptation of the second book in the series titled “The Viscount Who Loved Me”.
The story is about Anthony Bridgerton, who is the most eligible bachelor in London. He falls in love with a woman named Edwina Sheffield.
However, Edwina’s older half-sister, Kate Sheffield is the most meddlesome woman in London. So, she will most likely interfere in their relationship.
As expected, Julie Andrews will be back as Lady Whistledown and will narrate the story and cause more mischief with her Society Papers.
We will also learn more about the late Edmund Bridgerton, the previous Bridgerton patriarch. The first season mentioned him several times in the story, including his love story with Violet and their healthy marriage with so many children. However, we never found out the reason for his death. Edmund died because of an allergic reaction due to a bee sting in 1803. Even though he was stung before, the allergic reaction happened much later. Anthony was also stung by a bee with Edmund. Due to that, he has a lingering fear of bees and immense grief over his father’s death. Moreover, Anthony also believes that he will die at the age of 38, just like his father.
The second season will drop more hints about how much Edmund’s death affects Anthony. The eighteen-year-old boy had to take over the Viscounty just after his father’s death. Also, the fact that Violet was pregnant with Hyacinth before Edmund’s death, only added to Anthony’s grief.
