Haikyuu!!

Haikyuu!! the anime adaptation of the hit shounen manga with the same name has become one of the most-talked-about sports anime in the world. Now that news about the fifth season of the anime is making its rounds, we shall look at the most underrated characters in Haikyuu!!

The anime revolves around Hinata Shouyou, a short middle-school student who loves volleyball and wants to become a star player who plays in national championships. So he joins his school’s volleyball club. But, unfortunately for him, there were no other players except him. Shouyou doesn’t let this deter him, though. He acquires five players and starts a team. And then, he is finally able to register the team to play in the qualifiers. His first match is against Kitagawa Daichi, a team known to be led by the “King of the Court” Kageyama Tobio. Hinata loses this match devastatingly and swears to get stronger and defeat Kageyama. However, fate had the two play for the same team as both of them join Karasuno High School.

In the series, there are some players who don’t get enough screen time to shine. Here is a list of all the underrated characters in Haikyuu!!

1. Asahi Azumane

Azumane Asahi is the Ace of Karasuno High School. He’s part of the reason Karasuno made it to the finals and, without him, the team wouldn’t be as successful. And it’s not just because of his height. He’s strong, loyal, and dependable. His friendship with Nishinoya is portrayed pretty realistically in the anime.

2. Daichi Sawamura

Daichi Sawamura is the captain of the Karasuno High School in Haikyuu!! He is a third-year student and is a wing spiker. Daichi is the foundation the team rests on. His particular area of strength is his ability to receive the ball from the opposition.

He is very quick to notice the personality traits and abilities of his teammates and always encourages them to do their best. Just like Asahi, Daichi is loyal and dependable. It feels like his character has something to prove, so he works even harder.

3. Tetsurou Kuroo

Kuroo Tetsuro is the captain and middle blocker of the Nekoma High School volleyball team. He is a very skilled middle blocker. Being a third-year student and captain also gives him the experience necessary to make the correct decisions for his team. He is super important in the narrative as a very strong rival for Karasuno High.

However, in the first three seasons, he was not fully appreciated, and we did not get to see much of him. He really showed his prowess as a blocker in the practice sets in Tokyo. Kuroo also acted as the mentor for Tsukishima during that arc. He was the one who taught Tsukishima the foundation of Read Blocking.

4. Ginjima Hitoshi

Ginjima Hitoshi is a second-year student at Inarizaki High School and one of their wing spikers. As of 2021, he is a gym instructor in Osaka. Ginjima has a fiery personality and a very strong sense of responsibility at the same time. Despite making rash decisions at times, he cares deeply about his teammates. Ginjima played a vital part for Inarizaki during their match against Karasuno. Moreover, he is also known to often get the sounding from their Captain Shinsuke Kita.

5. Akagi Michinari

Akagi Michinari was a third-year libero of Inarizaki High school. At the present time, he is a high school PE teacher in Hyogo. He has a very friendly personality and often encourages his teammates during the match. Akagi has quick reflexes, rivaling even Nishimoya.

During the match against Karasuno High, he receives the ball with his foot at the end line of the court after Aran fails to receive it. While plenty of Inarizaki players were introduced to us pretty well, he was the one least talked about.

7. Hajime Iwaizumi

Hajime Iwaizumi is more of a side character, and he does not get much screen time at all. He is the vice-captain, wing spiker, and the ace of Aoba Johsai High school. Their team has been regarded as one of the best teams in Miyagi Prefecture.

Hajime Iwaizumi is very important to his team. He is the top-scoring player, and Oikawa happens to be his partner. While he is not as strong as Ushijima, he has his respect. His presence in the team makes them a bigger threat to our protagonists. In their second match with Karasuno, he was partially responsible for thwarting Yamaguchi’s pinch serves and converting them into points.

8. Koshi Sugawara

He is the vice-captain for Karasuno High School’s volleyball team. But he is quite downplayed in the anime as Tobio Kageyama has taken over as the team’s starting setter. However, this does not mean that he is a weak player in the team. Sugawara definitely has the experience and skills necessary to be pivotal for the team in key moments. During Karasuno’s first match against the Aoba Johsai team, Koshi Sugawara really changed the flow of the game.

9. Takanobu Aone

Takanobu Aone is another formidable player from Date Tech High school.  The anime has not highlighted well enough Aone’s role in the first season. He is a second-year student and middle blocker for the team. Takanobu is quite tall and possesses a lot of defensive prowess. It was because of him and the Iron Wall of Date Tech that Asahi had stopped playing Volleyball for some time.

10. Ittetsu Takeda

Now Takeda is not a player, but, nonetheless, he is a very important character in Haikyuu. He is the moral and logistical supporter of the Karasuno High school volleyball team. Takeda loves the game and the boys and is always trying to provide them with emotional support. He also worked hard to get Keishin Ukai to coach the team. He also got a lot of exclusive and important practice matches for Karasuno High against their surrounding powerhouse schools.
