Plot twists make any sort of story better. These stories include crazy shockers that could leave fans feeling betrayed for a long time. However, the best kind of plot twists is those with face revelations. Sometimes, the characters throughout the series do not reveal their identity and hide behind a mask. This mask can be literal as well as metaphorical. Not only this, but these characters can be a friend or a foe. Regardless, viewers always wish to know everything about a plot, including what lies behind these masks. Here we will talk about the most Iconic face reveals in anime.
In this list, we have put together ten face revelations that surprised fans. Before we get into the list, note that the list also contains some spoilers. These spoilers range from small to heavy spoilers, so proceed with caution. Another thing worth noting is that these revelations may not live up to some viewers’ expectations. However, they also exceeded some viewers’ expectations.
Gojou Satoru (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the most loved anime for the characters it introduces us to. However, from the anime, the character Gojou Satoru has been able to captivate the fans since he revealed his face. Satoru was a character who is introduced to us as a laid-back, “careless” teacher. He is also the strongest character in the story so far.
We knew that Gojou Satoru was a character that possessed an incredible amount of strength from the first episode. However, we did not know what hid behind the blindfold he wore. It was in Episode 7 of the anime that Satoru took off his blindfold to reveal not only his pretty blue eyes but also one of his most powerful Jutsu. The revelation of his complete face, which lasted for some minutes, was something that made him more likable by fans.
Kakashi Hatake (Naruto)
Team 7’s Senpai, Kakashi Hatake, has had his face hidden by a mask throughout Naruto as well as during the main events of Naruto Shippuden. How he looked without his mask became a concern not only for fans but also for team 7, which consisted of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. In some episodes, they even tried ways to get Kakashi to take off his mask but to no avail.
In episode 469, another character, Sukea, decided to help the team and their friends uncover Kakashi’s face. This plan failed again. However, the ending of the episode reveals that Sukea was Kakashi all along. He is seen removing his makeover as well as getting back to his normal voice pitch. This revelation, thus, is a secret between Kakashi and the viewers.
Inosuke Hashibira (Demon Slayer)
Perhaps the face revelation that took everyone by surprise was Inosuke Hashibira’s from Demon Slayer. We all wanted to know what was behind Inosuke’s boar-head mask but were not prepared to come across his face. Inosuke’s first appearance not only scared Zenitsu but also made us wonder what exactly he was. Sadly, the way he treated Zenitsu and Tanjiro did not appeal to the viewers.
In Episode 14, however, the boar-head he wore fell off to reveal a really pretty face. It made even Zenitsu and Tanjiro bewildered as we all concluded that his face didn’t match his voice or personality. Since then, Inosuke has been adored for his change in behavior towards the two and his antics. The Inosuke in season 2 has been able to make us think of him as a lovable character even more than before.
Obito Uchiha (Naruto: Shippuden)
Another character from Naruto and the first villain on the list, Obito Uchiha’s face revelation was shocking. Obito Uchiha was shown to have died in a mission as a big rock fell on him, damaging the right side of his body. While dying he asked Kakashi, his friend and rival, to look after Rin, the girl he loved. Unfortunately, Rin is killed and Kakashi, thus, lived on with the pain of losing both his friends and comrades.
We are then introduced to Tobi, a character that wears an orange mask and is a part of the Akatsuki. Although he appears like a fun character who also has many idiotic and funny moments, some moments revealed he indeed was a character with a secret plan. Being the mastermind behind the manipulation of the Akatsuki, he claimed to be Madara Uchiha. However, it was in episode 343 where Tobi’s mask was shattered by Naruto’s Rasengan. This caused Kakashi, Guy as well as the viewers to finally come across the truth that Obito Uchiha was alive.
William Vangeance (Black Clover)
Black Clover is an anime that has been gaining a lot of fans recently for its storyline. It introduces us to the world of Magic. The story also tells us the tale of the friendship between Asta and Yuno as well as his friends. It induces feelings of comradeship, especially during the fights and among the captains of their respective squads. William Vangeance leads the most powerful squad in Black Clover, The Golden Dawn Knights. Willaim seemed to be a peculiar character from the beginning. His attire included him wearing a mask.
William and the captain of the Black Bulls, Yami, share a good bond as they both have had similar backgrounds. However, because of the new enemy, Yami began suspecting William of being a traitor and asked him to reveal his face to him. At this point, it was even the viewers who suspected William to be the enemy, but when he revealed his face, the viewers were taken over with pity, and their suspicion was gone for the moment.
Suika (Dr. Stone)
Dr. Stone is an anime that is not only entertaining but also provides us with much scientific information. In the anime, we are introduced to a character who roams around with a watermelon helmet. Her name is Suika, and she appears to be very clumsy. However, she is a useful character when it comes to spying and helping around in the Kingdom of Science.
She usually doesn’t remove her helmet. However, when she does, we are taken aback by the cute face under the mask. This cute face lasts only for seconds as she makes a very sour-like face since she cannot see clearly. Thus, Senku being Senku fits glasses in her watermelon helmet so that she can see better.
Pride aka Selim Bradley (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood)
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood had a different storyline from Fullmetal Alchemist. However, the homunculi were the powerful villains in both adaptations. In Brotherhood, we come across most of the homunculi throughout the series except for Wrath and Pride, who are revealed at almost the end of the series. Although we did not know who Pride was, his face was revealed to us much earlier in the series. We come across Selim Bradley, who is the son of Fuhrer King Bradley, the homunculi Wrath. He portrays himself as a well-behaved kid who respects his elders and loves his parents. Selim Bradley also appears to be an ideal and brilliant student. However, all this is just a disguise he puts in front of others.
Later on, Selim Bradley reveals himself to be the homunculus Pride. In Fullmetal Alchemist, Selim’s personality was exactly that of the disguise he takes on in Brotherhood. Although he never wore a mask, Pride’s facial revelation took the viewers by surprise as nobody would’ve expected the well-behaved child to be one of the powerful homunculi in the series.
Z-one (Yu-gi-oh 5D’s)
The face revelation of Z-one from Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s was something that took viewers by surprise. Z-one was the main villain of the anime. While fighting the main protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh 5D’s, Yusei Fudo, Z-one is hit, which causes the left side of his mask to break. It is then revealed that Z-one resembles Yusei in an eerie way. Interestingly, Z-one concludes that he is Yusei from the future.
Z-one claims to have come from an apocalyptic future. He is a survivor from the future of the Meklord Emperor Genocide. To save the people, he takes on Yusei’s identity. Not only that, but he has tried to save the future in many ways. However, he could not stop Zero Reverse, which brought about a massive calamity to humankind.
Utsuro (Gintama)
Gintama is an anime that not only has a lot of action but also has an equal amount of comedic scenes to make anybody laugh. However, the series also has one of the strongest villains, Utsuro. Utsuro’s existence itself was immortal. Thus, it was a challenge for the main character Gintoki, who is strong too, to beat Utsuro. However, what lay behind Utsuro’s mask would make the whole situation emotionally challenging for Gintoki too. Utsuro is revealed to be Yoshida Shouyou, the man who Gintoki has respected all his life.
Gintoki was one of Yoshida Shouyou’s students. He was the accidental result of the chaos going on between Utsuro’s split personalities and took charge of them all for the time. Shouyou was captured, and so were his students. Gintoki was then given a choice to kill his sensei or his two friends. However, Shouyou had made Gintoki promise to protect his friends when he was being arrested. In the end, Shouyou is killed by Gintoki. Utsuro too “kills” Shouyou as well as his other personalities to gain control of his mind and body.
Kurogiri (My Hero Academia)
Nobody was really expecting Kurogiri to have a physical form. Eraser Head and Present Mic suddenly get called by the detectives who have captured Kurogiri. It is then revealed that Kurogiri is a Nomu created from the corpse of their friend Oboro Shirakumo. Although Oboro died in a battle against a villain, the detectives asked Eraser Head and Present Mic to talk to him and bring out Oboro.
Kurogiri has acquired a bit of Oboro’s personality. He was created to act as a bodyguard for Tomura. When his aforementioned friends tried talking to Oboro, it was seen that he was trying to fight Kurogiri’s Nomu form and come forward, sadly, to no avail.
