Here’s everything we have for you to know about Riverdale season 5.
Riverdale Season 5: Release Date
Most importantly, it’s now already been confirmed that Riverdale will come back to our screens on 20th January 2021. However, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed this great news on Twitter, thereby sharing a picture which showed the date along with its caption, “Back to the Future…buckle up you gang!.”

For now, CW had confirmed already a 5th season of the unusual show, which is particularly based on Archie Comics, was there in the pipeline all the way back in January, along with an intention basically for it to air this October before the pandemic got in our way of that. Its pre-production commenced in August 2020, before the creator and Aguirre-Sacassa confirmed in September that the whole shooting started on the new season, thereby posting an Instagram picture of himself and Riverdale cast members.
Besides, on 14th September, he also posted another picture. This time of the “1st scene…of season 5” – featuring KJ Apa in character as the series protagonist Archi, supposedly standing in a steam room.

As it seems like Riverdale is not moving anywhere either, as The CW president Mark Pedowitz titled it as one of the 3 shows which defines the whole network’s latest fresh direction. However, particularly speaking at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, he stated: ” We completely transitioned from a female-skewing network in 2010, ’11 and ’12 to more of male-focused along with all the Supernatural, and for now we all have moved a step back a bit with Riverdale, In the Dark and All American to a little different level.
Riverdale Season 5: Have a gaze at the Trailer!
The CW premiered the initial complete trailer for season 5 in December, teasing an entire load of drama to arrive– from masked sadists masquerading as Archie and his friends to Veronica crying over what seems like a possible romance between Betty and Archie.

Moreover, while declaring that the production was back underway on Twitter, showrunner Aguirre-Sacasa then shared a poster of the teaser that particularly shows a mystery woman running off from a truck, apparently shocked, at Riverdale’s city limits.
Upcoming Cast of Riverdale Season 5
While all the complete details of the upcoming season’s cast of Riverdale have not yet been announced, what we all know is that Jughead’s dad, who is FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), will not be making a return to the show in season 5. However, as Skeet Ulrich revealed in an interview, he has decided to “move on to explore some other creative opportunities further,” catching a role in its forthcoming Tom Hanks film Bios. So, while the latest Instagram Live, Ulrich exposed, he had quit the show as he “got little bored creatively.”
“How’s that? This is the usual honest explanation,” he added freely. However, his co-star Marisol Nichols, who performed Hermione Lodge, is also approved not to be coming back as a series usual. Moreover, all the way back in February, Riverdale producer and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke in a statement: “Part of life in Riverdale — and a part of building up — is like saying goodbye to people.
FP and Hermione will nevermore be far from our hearts. Besides, of course, they’re forever welcome back in Riverdale.”While Mädchen Amick will now be coming back to the show and later shared a catch from a Zoom table, saw for season five, showing how excited she was to be back.
Meantime, Aguirre-Sacasa declared back in September that Drew Ray Tanner (Fangs Fogarty) would be joining in the season 5 as a series normal, with the showrunner stating that he’ll be continuing with “on-again, off-again boyfriend Kevin Keller [Casey Cott] and Serpent Queen Toni Topaz [Vanessa Morgan],” before further adding more to it that we’ll be seeing more of Tanner’s singing talent.
All the Spoilers that you need!
As we all also do not know a lot about the plot of season 5, but the latest trailer and its initial look posters gave us some idea of what we can expect in the forthcoming series. However, in its trailer and a few of the initial look pictures, we can view the Riverdale gang head to prom, the “final dance they had with their friends,” we all can also see a bloody-faced Archie tell Veronica. Of course, it would not be just Riverdale if there was no particular drama at a school event. So, not only do we can view a few fights in between break out but the whole trailer also gave us a little hint at Veronica’s finding of Betty and Archie’s kiss previous season, with all of a destroyed Veronica saw crying: “Something for sure happened between Archie and Betty.”
According to the showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, their prom episode will now be the leading one back, with the producer mentioning in May that the prom and their graduation episodes are “huge, and emotional episodes.”
He further added:
“There are a whole lot of things going with its characters which we all are yet trying to work out, so it somehow seemed like maybe what we will do is commence with the season’s end 3 episodes. “So, as we all were with the kids at the high school for almost 4 years, you can now surely do not be wanting to take their graduation away from all of them. So what we are planning to do is hitting up right where we have earlier dropped off for the initial 3 episodes.”
Repeatedly, in Riverdale fashion, it seems as though season 5 will start an extra round of masked criminals, with the club receiving videos of people killing and wounding their others whilst wearing cartoonish masks of Archie, Betty, Veronica, and Jughead’s faces. Meanwhile, their fans of #Choni (Cheryl and Toni) will now be in for wonder this whole series after Vanessa Morgan, who performs Toni Topaz, unveiled that her real-life pregnancy was drafted into the show.
So, announcing the start of her maternity vacation on Instagram, the actress penned: “Feeling obliged to my showrunner and producers for being so welcoming and writing my pregnancy into the show. And I am proud of my body for letting me work almost 9 months preggo yet.” While these events of Toni’s pregnancy are currently unclear – particularly as part of the forthcoming series skips 7 into the future and so could see Toni and Cheryl start a family together – what’s confirmed is that we’re compelled to see some drama between the pair.
Meantime, a poster for the forthcoming season suggests the possible revival of a dead character. However, sharing the promo image on Twitter, Aguirre-Sacasa penned, “Nothing stays sinks forever,” along with several emojis involving a broken heart, a skull, and the crossbones, and an engagement ring. While it’s all difficult to know which character could be taken back from the dead at this stage, all bets are on Cheryl’s late brother Jason – the show’s very opening murder victim.
It also seems like there will be a tremendous time skip, with star Lili Reinhart affirming during an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “This specific time, we are now be going to do a 7-year time skip into the near future so that we can all not be moving to be those crazy teenagers anymore,” she revealed.
“I’m remarkably psyched about all of it. I believe it will be very nice to play with an adult. But I also really acknowledge that Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa], our showrunner, told, let’s revamp. So for now, we are not just stuck in high school for 7 seasons.”
What’s the reason behind cutting short Season 4?
Riverdale season 4 finished on 19 episodes, rather than the expected 22 because the whole coronavirus stopped production on the show, marking the season short. However, this all meant that a key prom event, formerly due to release as episode 20 in season 4, will now hit things off for a season 5, as the high schoolers don their glad-rags and buckle up for some severe drama.
“When it turned a little clear that we weren’t going to be able to close the season, the basic thing I sort of did to see at episode 20 first to understand if we could cobble by being together with an episode from that,” showrunner Robert Aguirre-Sacasa reported to Entertainment Weekly.

Aguirre-Sacasa’s remarked hint at a likely estimate for the ‘love square’ between the basic 4 characters, Betty, Veronica, Archie, and Jughead, after Archie and Betty, kissed, thereby cheating on their own partners, all during season 4, episode 17.
“We haven’t still learned or understood the complete end of the song that Archie had written for Betty [While season 4, episode 18], and best at this moment where they should be glorifying everything, a lot occurs,” Aguirre-Sacasa told.
Could all this be the result of Archie and Veronica as a pair? Or will Jughead also split the things off with his longtime girlfriend, Betty, or will Archie’s song reignite her old feelings for him, offering her the one to betray Jughead?
Moreover, what will this all mean long-term for the Riverdale teen inmates as they graduate high school and go off to college?
Riverdale screenwriter Ted Sullivan also unveiled in a tweet that season 4 was due to holding a “heavy” episode centering on Toni (Vanessa Morgan). Some fans are suspecting she will concentrate on her past sexual assault.
hi ted beetlejuice is dope does toni get a backstory this season like we’ve been promised the last 3 seasons

This whole episode will now also be delayed to form part of season 5.
