It’s a simple TV show that uses dance-flick clichés from films like Fame, Flashdance, and Steps Up, including hip-hop dancers from the wrong side of the tracks and untrained ballet dancers impressed with their passion. There was never a cliché that the show didn’t enjoy (something the film acknowledges and lightly lampoons in a winning opening sequence). But its protagonists are also convincing teenagers. They are endearing, awkward, and self-possessed and try to improve both as dancers and as people, but they still make poor choices.
