Excited for Mayflies Episode 2? A new two-episode BBC drama called Mayflies will showcase Scotland’s brilliance in plenty. It seems to be a great miniseries, starring Tony Curran from Your Honor, Ashley Jensen from After Life, and Martin Compston from Line of Duty.
The show is based on Andrew O’Hagan’s bestseller novel of the same name, which was selected as the 2021 Scottish Book of the Year by Waterstones, and received high praise from authors like Colm Tobin and Graham Norton. In a remark to the BBC, O’Hagan commented on the TV adaptation, “the story is extremely personal to me, and it’s wonderful to witness the characters come to life.”
Everybody has their own Tully Dawson—the friend who helps you define your life. Jimmy and Tully start a fantastic friendship centered on music, movies, and the rebel attitude in the summer of 1986 in a little Scottish town.
After finishing school and facing their dads’ closed-off world, they race towards the peak of their youth: a beautiful weekend in Manchester, the heart of all of working-class Britain that inspires them. They make a promise: to approach life differently, set to the finest backdrop ever recorded.
After 30 years, one of the friends gets a phone call from another. Tully has terrible news and a request that will put their love, friendship, and commitment to the very limit. Mayflies serve as a tribute to both everyday tragedy and teenage joy. It explores the joy and pains of love as it bids a touching farewell to a longtime partnership.
In Mayflies, Tony Curran portrays an elder Tully, and Martin Compston portrays an older James. Thirty years have passed since their fun weekend in Manchester in 1986, and now they are reflecting on what happened. Martin’s breakout performance came as a troubled kid in the Ken Loach film Sweet Sixteen. He is now most recognized for his portrayal of DS Steve Arnott in the criminal drama series Line of Duty. He has appeared in the films Mary Queen of Scots, Traces, The Nest, and Death in Paradise.
Martin got to play Ewan Brodie in the show Monarch of the Glen from the year 2003 to 2005. Martin Compston is scheduled to host the BBC2 new documentary Martin Compston’s Scottish Fling, and he will also appear in the Prime Video thriller The Rig, which is set on an oil rig in Scotland. Tony Curran portrayed Sgt. Mikey in Ray Donovan, and Despero in The Flash. Additionally, he appeared in the TV shows Elementary, Roots, Crazyhead, and Defiance. In Mayflies, Ashley Jensen plays Anna, Tully’s wife, and has previously been in Agatha Raisin and Extras.
Other cast members for Mayflies include Tom Glynn-Carney playing young Tully, Tracy Ifeachor playing Iona, Elaine C. Smith playing Barbara, Rian Gordon who plays young Jimmy, Cal MacAninch playing Tibbs, Shauna Macdonald who plays Fiona, and Colin McCredie who plays Scott.
