Who is Adam Warlock? How He Defeated Thanos? Back in 2015, as the mid-credit scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron ended, the loyal marvel audience stayed back, waiting for another small snippet that they hoped would tell them more about the next movie in line. They were rewarded with a small clip showing the infamous villain from Guardians of the Galaxy, Thanos flaunting his infinity gauntlet, embedded with the infinity stones.
Now, as we gear up for the finale, Avengers: Infinity War, set to release in April 2018, there is much speculation about how the band of superheroes and mutants will defeat Thanos with his Infinity gauntlet. And while there are quite a few characters in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe capable of such an act, there is one that is missing from the MCU so far.
Who Is Adam Warlock?
Adam Warlock first appeared in the Marvel Comics in the early editions of Fantastic Four and Thor. A group of earthen scientists who call themselves the Enclave, created a perfect, artificial human being, and named him “Him”, and he was later rechristened as “Adam”. Adam or Adam Warlock not only possesses incredible super human strength and agility, but also the power to manipulate cosmic energy. When his life is threatened, this character is known to create a cocoon around himself, enabling him to preserve himself, heal and regenerate. In the comics, Adam Warlock is the possessor of the ‘Soul Gem’, one of the six infinity stones. With the power of the Soul Gem complimenting his own, he is all but the most powerful being – human, or otherwise- in the universe.
How Adam Warlock Defeated Thanos?
And while Adam Warlock is so incredibly powerful, he also possesses a conscience – one trait his creators had not intended him to have – as a result of which, he escapes from the Enclave and eventually joins the Guardians of the Galaxy in the battle against Thanos and directly contributes (with the possession of the Soul Gem, of course) to his downfall and reformation. Adam, unintentionally, becomes the only adversary worthy of Thanos’ power. The Batman to his Joker, if you will. There is actually an instance in the comics where Adam Warlock recreates the entire universe. (Now, if that isn’t the coolest thing ever, I don’t know what is!)
It is definitely a disheartening to note the absence of such a powerful and interesting character from the MCU so far. However, in the mid-credit scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, we notice Ayesha, the high priestess of the Sovereign race, talking about having engineered a new member who, she claims, will be the next step in the evolution of the Sovereign race. She calls this creation of hers Adam.
Now, in the comics, Adam and Ayesha are actually counterparts, the “Him” and “Her” of the universe, complimenting each other in their powers and personalities. And while their origins are different in the movies and the comics, their powers and abilities will probably not vary as much. Under the current circumstances, Adam Warlock is bound to follow a path similar to the one he tread on in the comics, if he is to participate in the Infinity War and come face-to-face with Thanos.
While much is up for speculation, there is no doubt that this new addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be nothing short of mind blowing!
