It’s one of the most successful viral videos in recent memory, picking up more than 4.5 million views on YouTube at time of writing, and that figure is rising fast.
Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen – or PPAP, as all the cool kids are calling it – features a Japanese man in lurid yellow clothing gyrating to tinny beat, while rapping (sort of) about fruit and stationary, with a spot of mime thrown in for good measure.
It’s really hard to do its inane infectiousness justice. You’re better off just watching the stupid thing, but be warned: It will be stuck in your head for the rest of the day:
The yellow-clad fruit-and-pen-haver is Piko-taro – a character created by comedian and DJ Kosaka Daimaou, who is surely poised on the brink of Psy-style international celebrity, with various outlets describing PPAP as the ‘next Gangnam Style.’
